Let the Ribbon Be Your Guide!

I would never have chosen this color combination normally, but the ribbon called for it and I think it turned out pretty cute. Just a simply Birthday card for a friend using one of the paisleys from the Little Bits Jolies Fleurs set (background image) and the Happy Birthday set (candles and sentiment on the tag.)

Behind the Blog Banner...

I think I finally have my blog banner looking the way I want it and I thought it might be fun to explain the meaning behind the design. You may notice a date on the postmark---June 06. That is when we officially started to do business as Lizzie Anne Designs (or when our business license was issued.) The flower behind the date is the first stamp I ever designed. And the colors---green and lavender---are my favorite colors. So there you have it!

Another fun fact. I come from a long line of Lizzies...my great grandmother's sister was named Elizabeth, and then girls in each generation after that have been given Elizabeth as a middle name--my grandmother, mother, me, and now my daughter Samantha! I think this would make a great scrapbook page subject and I plan on doing that soon...

You Are My Sunshine

I'm all into "sun" cards right now...I keep coming up with more ideas. It must be because Summer is finally here and I'm loving it! And then I find this cute You Are My Sunshine paper by Sweetwater the other day so I'm making a bunch of cards with that. I was humming the words to You Are My Sunshine the whole time I was making this card...it put me in such a good mood! :) I even went and bought a little swimming pool for my four-year-old son and his friends to play in. Yay summer!

Confessions of a Ribbon Addict

It's true. I hoard ribbon. I've always loved ribbon but I think my obsession began when I owned my scrapbooking/stamping store and I went to my first wholesale show. I was walking the aisles of the show when all of a sudden there it was...the May Arts booth (insert beam of light from above.) I ended up placing a sizeable order at that booth, insisting to my sister/business partner that we needed it "for the store" (me.) I've been hoarding ribbon ever since. And rarely does a card, scrapbook page, or any other papercraft project I'm working on come unadorned with ribbon.

I'm not going to feel too guilty about this because I know I'm in good company here, but what I am feeling guilty about is how I've managed to throw my ribbon stash into this wicker basket through the years and now it looks like this (see photo.) I included my cute baby in the photo to try and distract you from the mess...did it work? Oh and that blue spot in the upper left hand corner is Stampin Up chalk smashed into the carpet. ;) So if anyone has any ideas on how to store hoards of ribbon, let me know! (By the way, this photo doesn't show all of it by any means.)

Baby Face

I just got back from visiting my friend Ulrika in Salt Lake where she is staying with her in-laws, so I haven't had much time to do much other than work on the many orders that came in while I was gone (which I love doing of course! :) I had a great time...I also got together with friends Meridith and Katie and we joked and laughed about our college days and crazy Art Department stories (like our Life Drawing classes, those were always a good laugh ;) I took Ulrika to her first ever scrapbooking store--as she doesn't know of one in Sweden yet--and needless to say she spent way more money than she had planned on. I learned she had been making cards and scrapbook pages using Spray Mount, an adhesive we used to use in Design school, which absolutely horrified me! So I educated her on the many tools and adhesives available and I'm sure I'll be getting plenty of emails from her asking me to send along more supplies! :) (Anyone know of a scrapbooking or stamp store in Sweden?)

I wanted to quickly post a frame I had decorated for my husbands office. He has lots of photos of our son but none of Samantha so I thought I better add her to his collection!

Sending Sunshine!

I made this quick card for a friend who's feeling a bit blue, and also as a good omen that there will be lots of sunshine for the camping trips we have planned the next two weekends! The Washington coast is so much nicer when it's sunny and not raining ;)

Stars and Stripes

We pulled out our tent-trailer today to start getting it ready for our annual camping trip to the beach over the 4th of July holiday...and it really got me in the mood for Independence Day cards! And I've had some ideas using our Celebrations stamps for some time...

Check out the cute jeweled stars....where did I get them? Target! I have to admit that I'm one of those people who has a hard time passing the $1 bins they put at the front of the store when you walk in...I guess I'm their "target" audience. (no pun intended :) It works, what can I say? Sometimes they have really cute little scrapbooking embellishments in there...like these stars.

All these cards are using the same Little Bits sets: Celebrations I, Celebration Sayings, Designer Dots, and Shapes & Stitches. I made "fireworks" using one of the Designer Dots!
Ink: Stampin Up Ruby Red and Buckaroo Blue.
Cardstock: Stampin Up Ruby Red and Bazzill (blue).
Ribbon: Michaels.

This last card is a little notecard that I'm sending to my friend along with a red and blue USA baby girl outfit (so cute.) I thought the phrase "As American as Apple Pie" would be a cute thing to say with a 4th of July themed baby gift.

Cute (and Easy!) Birthday Presents

I have a bunch of friends with summer birthdays coming up and I'm so excited about the gift idea I've done for them that I had to post them (even though they will probably read my blog and find out what they are getting! That's okay ;) I went to Michaels the other day to check out the new Martha Stewart Crafts line and I saw this adorable 3-pack of notebooks. They are called "Journal Multipack" and there are three 48 page notebooks...the paper inside is white which I like and they have adorable patterns! I'm not seeing them online right now but maybe I'm not looking in the right place...

Anyways I decorated these notebooks/journals to give as presents and I think they turned out really cute!

This notebook is for my dear friend Zena who truely believes that everything is a little better with glitter on it. So I've added some glitter to the flowers and the bee. This was done with the Blissful Blossoms set and also the Alpha Bits Chloe set which I chose for Zena because we actually named that alphabet set after Zena's daughter, Chloe! Think of a cute little blonde girl with an English accent. She reminds me of "Lola" from the Disney cartoon Charlie and Lola if you've ever seen it ;)

This notebook is for Meridith and I used the Daisy Dots set to make the cute flower behind the chipboard M. Too cute. Something else I love about this one...I got to use my Queen and Co. Brads! Yeah! I love how that swirly brad matches the swirl in the middle of the flower...

This notebook is for my cousin Emily. I used a bunch of different stamps on this one. I made the monogram with the Alpha Bits Apricot set and then I textured the strip of Basic Grey paper with one of our Designer Dots that matched the monogram. I used the Daisy Dots set to make the flower behind the monogram and the leaf from Blissful Blossoms to make the ribbon stem. I've been noticing a lot of bloggers doing the paper peircing on the scalloped circle punch and so I tried that...love it!

I think I'm going to go and get more of these sketchbooks to decorate...since I've done these I can think of a ton more people I could do them for!

The Whole Story

We have a little “About Us” section on our website, but I thought that it might be fun to share the whole story of how we got started...

Meridith and I have known each other since middle school but we became really good friends in our AP Art class in highschool. We had an amazing art teacher—Marjorie McClure—and I loved her class. In fact, I’d wait to skip school until 4th period because AP Art was 2nd and 3rd period. Ha ha. Anyways, toward the end of our senior year in AP Art Meridith told me about her sister who was in the Graphic Design program at the University of Utah (go Utes!) and how we should be graphic designers too cause look at all the cool stuff we get to do, etc. I believe my reply was something like, “what the frick is a Graphic Designer? I’m going to be an Archelologist.” Ha! Seriously though, I didn’t know what a Graphic Designer was and it had never occurred to me to turn my hobby (art) into my actual career. However with some encouragement from my fabulous art teacher and Meridith this is indeed what I did. Meridith and I both applied to the Graphic Design program at the U and were accepted, and thus started my graphic design journey. It’s a good thing too because I don’t know what I’d be doing today if I hadn’t made that decision…digging up bones somewhere with a Baby Bjorn strapped to my chest I guess? I definitely made the right decision ;)

While we were in the design program at the U, we would often talk about what we wanted to do in the design field once we graduated. Meridith and I talked about a card company often. We were always making our own cards. Back then I think that cute stamps were hard to come by, I’m not even sure Stampin’ Up was around yet (the horror!) and so we were always photo-copying designs out of our graphic design books and coloring them in with our Pantone color markers to use on cards. At one point we even interviewed with some recruiters from Hallmark who came to talk with our class, and that sounded really fun until we found out we’d have to move to Kansas. (No offense to the Kansas folk…it’s just that we had men on the West Coast ;)

So, we’ve always loved cardmaking, and being from Utah we had both been scrapbooking for years as well…though scrapbooking in Utah used to be a little cardstock, some Mrs. Grossmans stickers, and some decorative-edged scissors. How far that hobby has come (thank goodness!) Alas, when we graduated, Meridith already had a very good job as a graphic designer at the University of Utah, and I decided I wanted to try something new and moved to Seattle to look for work. I ended up learning web design and worked for Microsoft and then ESPN.com for many years.

We always kept in touch though, and when we both had kids we started looking for work that wouldn’t keep us away from home as much. It just so happened that my sister moved up to Seattle shortly after my son was born, and being an avid scrapbooker herself, we decided to open up our own scrapbooking and stamp store in the little town of Duvall where I lived! That was quite an adventure in itself and deserves it’s own blog post, so I will write about that later. It was while I owned the store that I started to learn much more about the papercrafting industry and got up the gumption to start looking into designing my own line of rubber stamps. I called up Meridith at one point and asked if she was ready to take the plunge, and she was!

It’s a very intimidating thing to design your own product to sell. I’m sure this is why we didn’t do this long ago…we didn’t know how! If I hadn’t owned that store I wouldn’t have known where to start. We both had a million ideas for our stamp designs but we really didn’t know how to get them made. After a lot of research we finally figured it out…and decided to make our product cling stamps. We were going back and forth on the benefits of traditional wood-mounted, cling, or clear stamps for a long time. We both agreed we loved traditional rubber stamps but we also loved how easy it was to store the clear stamps…which is why cling stamps were the perfect choice. We started working on our designs…and I remember the day those first sets showed up from our manufacturer…it was SO exciting!!! I couldn’t wait to use them.

We exhibited at Winter CHA this year and were so excited by the response our stamps were receiving…it really launched our company. We learned so much at that show and of course met all kinds of fabulous papercrafting people. The people in this industry are SO awesome.

So that’s our story! This has been such a fun year and I look forward to many more fun Lizzie Anne years ahead!

For My Pop!

My Dad is one of those Dads that has everything and needs nothing (other than a hug.) So trying to come up with thoughtful Father's Day gifts is tough. I'm kind of excited about this idea though. One thing my Dad can never get enough of is Coke. And that would be Classic Coca Cola...(no diet or cherry, etc.) Every time he comes to visit me in Seattle the first thing he asks me when he walks in the door is "Where is the Coke?" I'm not kidding. And I usually don't have it. So, he is coming to visit a week after Father's Day and I will have his present waiting for him in the fridge this time...a whole 2-liter of Classic Coke just for him. I thought this would make a really cute father's day present with the "For my Pop!" theme! I used the Lizzie Anne Shapes and Stitches and Pupcat alphabet sets for this idea. Shapes and Stitches is one of our newer sets, and I can't believe how many ideas I've already had for that set...it's a good one.

Father's Day

This is a card I made for my husband for fathers day using the Little Bits All Guy set. I call it the "favorite things" card. It simply shows a lot of his favorite things---motorcycles, computers, and video games---things that I know make him happy so why not plaster them all over a card? (Gee,I wonder where the inspiration for the All Guy set came from? ;) The attached ticket is for one Sunday sleep-in. Meaning that he gets to sleep in on Sunday, which is usually *MY* day to sleep in, instead of getting up with the kids at 7:30am (we are not morning people!) That ticket is a golden ticket, believe me. It's going to be hard for me to give it to him...ha ha. I'll give him the card the day before Fathers Day so he can use the ticket that day.

Thoughts on designing cards for men. My husband appreciates me trying to make his cards masculine, but I don't think he minds if they are a little girly either. I'm not a afraid to use a little ribbon on his cards and I've even been known to add a flower or two, why not?! I am, after all, a girl, and I'm pretty sure he likes that about me. I think he appreciates a woman's touch.

I'm Bloggin!

Hi everyone...I am the co-owner of Lizzie Anne Designs and I design rubber stamps with my good friend, Meridith. We launched Lizzie Anne Designs about a year ago (though we've been talking about it for probably 10+ years) and the past year has been so much fun. Now we think it's about time we had our own blogs....

Meridith and I have become blog addicts. We were introduced to Splitcoast Stampers at Winter CHA (how we didn't find these guys before that I have no idea...I guess we were too busy designing stamps) and we became instant addicts...not only to the Splitcoast Stampers website but to all the amazing people posting card designs to their blogs! We realized with great delight how many stampaholics there are out there just like us, and what better place to share that addiction!

So welcome to my new stamping blog...a place where I hope to share inspiring card and scrapbooking layouts, news from Lizzie Anne Designs, and stuff that is just plain ol' fun to post.
